IMPORTENCE OF BREAST FEEDINGS

For infants to survive, grow and development properly they require the right proporation of nutrients.Breast milk is rich in nutrients and anti-bodies that help your body fight off virus and bacteria. It also contains the right quantities of fat, sugar, water and protein. These nutrients are major pre-requisites to the health and survival of the body. When a child is exclusively breastfed, their immune system is strengthened, enabling it to life threatening illnesses like pneumonia and diarrhoea amongst other infections.Breastfeeding lowers your baby`s risk of having asthma or allergies.

COLOSTRUM

The world health organization recommended that colostrum, the yellowish sticky breast milk that is produced at the end of pregancy as the ideal food for newborns, to be given within the first hour of birth,a process referred to as early initiation. Infants breast fed within the first hour of birth are three times more likely to survive than those who have their first breast milk after a day.Pediatriction  recommend breastfeeding exclusively for 6 months and breast feeding for a year at least with other foods which should be started at 6 months of age, such as vegetables, grains, fruits, proteins.
Breast feeding also play a role in the prevention of SIDS (Sudden infant death syndrome).

ANTIBODIES

Breastfeeding is protecting your body from a range of illness.Antibodies ,also called immunoglobulins (Ig),help your immune system fight against pathogens such as virus and bacteria that causes diseases..The main antibody in breast milk is called secretory immunoglobulin A (IgA).Secretory IgA is present in low quantities in newborns and high amounts in colostrum, the first milk your body produces.Over time, the level of antibodies in your breast milk decreases as your baby`s immune system makes more of its own antibodies.

BREAST FEADING SHEDULE

Breast feed schedule may be as often as 12 times per 24 hours or every 1 to 2 hours) because a new born infant will need to be feed often because baby`s stomach is very small, so you may find that you are nursing every 1 to 2 hours for the first several weeks, but this will not last long.

BREAST FEEDING BENFITS FOR MOTHER

Breast feeding burns extra calories, so it can help you lose pregnancy weight faster. It releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps you uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size and may reduce uterine bleeding after birth.Breast feeding also lowers your risk of breast and overian cancer. It may lower risk of oesteoporosis.

LOWER THE STRESS LEVELS

Many women report feeling relaxed while breast feedings. That's because nursing triggers the release of oxytocin. The "love hormone" oxytocin promotes nurturing and relaxation, with increased levels linked to lower blood pressure and lower levels of cortisol. The stress hormone.(oxytocin released while nursing also help your uterus contract after birth, resulting in less postpartum bleeding).

 MOMS SHOULD NOT BREAST FEED

If they have HIV/AIDS, have t-cell lymphotropic virus, use illegal drugs, are being treated with cancer chemotherapy medications or radiation and have active tuberculosis.
